How and why to be emotionally intelligent in academia?
The Academic Writing Center elegantly closed the spring semester with a discussion about the role of emotional intelligence and empathy in a researcher’s work.
At the online workshop "Emotional intelligence in academia" on June 11, we spoke about active listening techniques and strategies for providing constructive non-evaluative feedback that could work for academics. The speaker Yulia Ryabukhina shared an effective feedback model and invited participants to practice using it in mini-group activities. Apart from oral communication, the participants focused on the manifestations of empathy and emotional intelligence in academic writing. By studying sample texts, the colleagues analyzed how the author can apply certain linguistic means to make their stance clear and engage the reader in active dialogue.
We would like to thank Yulia for a meaningful discussion of an important topic and the participants - for their involvement and feedback:
- “The workshop was such a great experience. I learned many concepts that I normally don't think about on a day-to-day basis. Very inspiring. Excellent structure and presentation.”
- “It was good to have an opportunity for training and discussion. Also, it was interesting to know about new research on emotional intelligence.”
- “The group tasks were really interesting. I've never done anything like this in the workplace before. Valuable examples, new academic writing models and conceptions involving EI”
