AWC Guidelines: Individual Consultations
The Academic Writing Center (AWC) offers face-to-face individual consultations to HSE researchers and teachers. The one-hour sessions provide staff with feedback on their scholarly texts. They are free for HSE staff. The consultations are educational and interactive; authors are encouraged to actively participate in text improvement.
Our consultants are native speakers of English who have a wide experience in editing academic texts. Authors can also opt for a session with Russian experts. These sessions can be conducted in English or Russian, according to the author’s preference.
The consultants usually deal with complete papers of different genres. But you are welcome to come to the Center at any stage of your writing if you need advice on structuring a paper, language difficulties or useful online resources. The consultants help to identify language problems and improve text readability; they provide feedback on style and genre requirements. However, the content of the paper is entirely your responsibility. The amount of text processed during a session depends mostly on the quality of writing.

To make the most of the session time, please get ready for your consultation:
1) Choose the journal you would like to get published in long before you start writing.
2) Read and analyze articles from the journal to “feel” the journal’s expectations.
3) Read the journal’s guide for authors and strictly follow it in terms of paper structure, format, and style.
4) Bring the style guide to the consultation for reference.
6) Bring your text either printed (double spaced is preferable) or on your laptop.
7) Briefly describe what you would like to focus on during the consultation when you fill out the registration form.
All individual consultations require online registration. Please, carefully fill out the registration form with all contact details, indicating the email you regularly check. We work on a first-come-first-served basis.
You can choose the date, time and consultant when you register. Having submitted the form, you will receive a notification. Consultants cannot arrange dates or times with you.
If you cannot attend your session, please write an email to the manager no later than one working day before your appointment. Regular no-shows will be blacklisted.
You can register for several non-consecutive individual consultations when needed; the number of sessions should not exceed three per month.
To accommodate the needs of as many people as possible, we discourage you from booking two sessions in a row. In case of urgency, please contact the manager firstname.lastname@example.org
If available slots don’t fit with your schedule, please tick the box ‘These times are not convenient for me’. The manager will get in touch with you and offer you the earliest opportunity possible.
Please help us ensure consultation quality. Fill out the online feedback form right after your consultation. It will not take you longer than three minutes and will be very helpful for us.
We would be happy to learn about your publication success. Please write to the AWC when your paper is published.
Good luck! We’re ready to help you.
