English syntax: humanities vs. hard sciences

At the online workshop held by the AWC, the trainer Irina Kostyukovich demonstrated the variety in sentence structure and the disciplinary differences.

As we all know, articles in humanities and hard sciences differ significantly in terms of vocabulary and structure. Did you know that there are differences in syntax, too? At the online workshop held by the AWC, the trainer Irina Kostyukovich demonstrated the variety in sentence structure and the disciplinary differences. The participants learnt about the types of sentences and paragraph organization common in humanities and hard sciences and practiced correcting mistakes typical of Russian authors.

What sentence types are more common in your filed? Read carefully and observe the features of your discourse to write reader-friendly, well-structured texts.

  • “I liked the comparison between hard sciences and the humanities in terms of sentence structure. This is not what you usually find in the literature.”
  • “Balance between theory and practice, feedback to the audience, Interesting examples and very clear explanations.”
  • “The information was very precise and specific, no beating about the bush. Very interactive seminar, we were all involved.”

Many thanks to Irina and all the participants! Our next workshop will be devoted to English collocations and online resources that can help you combine words successfully.
