Writing techniques: AI vs. HI or AI with HI?
Now that the initial enthusiasm (as well as shock, denial, and bargaining 🙂) about the advent of AI has faded, we are all trying to evaluate its pros and cons and decide what AI is good for and what had better be left to HI.
At the workshop “AI tools for learning / teaching writing” on February 25, the speaker Sofia Stalskaya invited colleagues to analyze AT generated texts and identify their most prominent features and weaknesses. The participants also tried to tweak generated texts to make them more human, both by themselves and with the help of … AI. Finally, Sofia shared some effective prompting techniques, which were immediately tested by the participants.
The main takeaway: AI is certainly a very useful tool, but it might be early days yet to expect it to write a high-quality text from scratch. What is AI really good at? Here are some ideas from the workshop participants:
- I use ChatGPT for spotting redundancy, grammar mistakes, and errors
- For ideas mostly
- To make a digital avatar of a lecturer
- For automation of my activities
- Sometimes AI gives good suggestions regarding the structure of mails in some complicated situations.
Despite the wide choice of AI-related events, our workshop gathered more than 70 participants and received lots of highly positive feedback:
- “The structure of the workshop was very good. I enjoyed the exercises as well, very engaging. We learnt about immediately usable AI tools and prompting techniques.”
- “The workshop was informative and illustrative. I also appreciated perfect time management, deep knowledge of the speaker, and a friendly atmosphere.”
- “It was interactive, there were a lot of practical assignments so that the knowledge about AI was built on practice. Time flew!”
