"He who thinks clearly expresses himself clearly" is a 'golden rule' of the Enlightenment Age, which is often forgotten by authors submitting their manuscripts to academic journals. Meanwhile, the reverse is true as well in the eyes of editors and reviewers. If the writing is confusing, the reader may question the author’s ideas, even before getting to the essence of the research, namely its novelty.           

At our workshop, we will consider some useful tools for clarifying the topicality and importance of the research. These tools will help authors sort out their thoughts and facilitate communication with reviewers.  We will look at a real example of a research paper to follow the process of formulating the research problem, building a conceptual research model, and describing the knowledge gap. 

Speaker: Kirill Rozhkov, Professor at the Marketing Department of the Graduate School of Business, HSE University, is the author of academic papers published in the Journal of Place Management and Development and Qualitative Market Research. His research interests include place marketing and branding, and management of tourist destinations. Since 2016, Kirill has been reviewing articles for the Journal of Place Management and Development, Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, Qualitative Market Research, and other journals. He is the winner of the Emerald Publishing Awards for Excellence (Highly recommended paper - 2016).

A research presentation is not just a sequence of slides, but it is a cognitive interface that shapes how audiences perceive, process, and retain information. When overloaded, attention drops and the message is lost. This seminar explores the principles of cognitive load in educational and academic materials and offers practical tools to reduce unnecessary complexity. The seminar will be relevant for researchers, teachers, and students who design lectures, posters, public talks, and other visual materials. What types of load exist? How do we distinguish cognitive overload from conceptual difficulty? What makes a presentation both effective and cognitively friendly? Grounded in cognitive psychology, the session translates key research findings into applicable techniques. Participants will leave with a set of actionable strategies to simplify structure, improve flow, and support understanding.

Speaker: Tatiana Ledneva is a researcher at the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, HSE University (Cognitive Health & Intelligence Center). Tatiana specializes in empirical aesthetics, neuroaesthetics, and embodied cognition and leads seminars on visual perception and human interaction with the material environment.

People often change their career paths, facing new challenges and gaining new experiences. We invite those who have come to the scientific community from industry to attend our workshop. 

The speaker will share his experience and tips on how to generalize field research data and turn it into meaningful research papers. Having actively explored artificial intelligence tools in his research writing endeavors, the speaker will also share strategies of using AI tools to improve research skills and streamline the writing process. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss the difficulties they encounter when preparing their first international publication and the ways to overcome these challenges.

Speaker: Ilya Denisenko, Ph.D. in Education, is a leading expert at the HSE Institute of Education. Ilya has worked his way up from a teacher to coordinator of international studies on the quality of education. His main research interests include education management and prevention of school failure. Ilya is the author of the podcast Education Without Myths and the Telegram channel Project 500+.

The path to publishing in international English-speaking journals can be complex, obscure, and frustrating, particularly for Russian speaking researchers. In this workshop, we will explore the expectations and perspectives of foreign editors, focusing on the specific requirements they prioritize and the aspects of submissions that draw their attention most. I will share insights from my own experience of publishing articles in English-language journals and in selection of papers. Together, we will discuss and examine the differences in the Russian and English-speaking academic writing styles.

Speaker: Marina Tsatrian, MA in Educational Leadership (the University of Manchester, UK) is an expert at the Laboratory for School Leadership and a lecturer at MA Educational Leadership program at the Institute of Education, HSE University. Marina’s professional interests involve data-informed decision-making of school leadership teams and leadership practices of school principals.
