Building bridges to international publications

This fall the AWC had a unique opportunity to invite a world-renowned specialist in research writing to share her experience with our colleagues in a series of workshops.

Building bridges to international publications

We were honored to be able to work with Talinn Phillips from Ohio University, who spoke about various strategies that can help scholars to get integrated in the global research and succeed in publishing their work in high-ranking journals. Apart from HSE researchers, we invited colleagues from Tyumen State University, Chelyabinsk State University, and South-Ural State University to join the workshops.

At the first workshop “What leads to publication failure,” Tallinn and participants discussed how writing groups and reviewing experience can help a researcher prepare and publish an article. We also looked at possible reasons to challenge a journal’s decision and at ways to do it correctly and effectively.

The workshop “How 'to sell' your research to the journal” was focused on such tools for promoting your research to editors as a catchy title, a well-written abstract, and a persuasive description of your contribution to the field.

Last but not least, the workshop “Dos and don’ts of communicating with reviewers and editors” provided participants not only with tips on effective correspondence with other actors in the publication process, but also with an opportunity to take part in a panel discussion and ask pertinent questions to editors from various fields of study.

We are pleased that the participants appreciated the variety of formats and activities as well as the usefulness of the workshops’ content:

  • "The workshop was incredibly informative and engaging. Tallinn shared her personal experiences and described some difficult situations she had faced. It was very supportive and inspiring for me."
  • "I especially liked the effective examples of "selling" titles and abstracts, the interactive activities, and the productive discussions based on participants' experience."
  • “I was particularly inspired by the panel discussion with the invited guests. It was incredibly valuable to hear from editors across various fields and to receive their practical tips!"

Many thanks to Talinn, our partners from Tyumen and Chelyabinsk, and all the colleagues who attended the workshops!

The AWC will follow with another workshop series from an expert in accents and public speaking. Join us on November 25 at the workshop on accent diversity and on December 2 at the workshop on cross-cultural communication.
