Writing a strong academic text: On grammar and beyond

Academic writing is a highly demanding endeavor. Like in any other genre, the author should strive to be eloquent and effective, but on top of that - precise and concise. What can help a budding academic writer achieve these standards? A toolkit of smart language techniques, nominalization being one of them.

Writing a strong academic text: On grammar and beyond

On Tuesday, May 14 the AWC held the workshop "Navigating nominalization: From useful patterns to impactful academic writing," which focused on strategies of writing a reader-friendly, high-quality academic text, in particular, nominalization. The speaker Anna Kascheeva talked about dos and don’t of formulating ideas in academic discourse and offered participants a set of interactive activities on using noun phrases. The issues under discussion included articles and prepositions, word-building, and other aspects of noun use.

This time we decided to take on the challenge of the hybrid format again, and we are proud to say that, according to the participants’ feedback, we managed to keep both the online and offline audience engaged.

  • “I liked the well-chosen examples and the handout. The speaker's assistant was professional, which is a rarity nowadays.”
  • “The speaker’s support of the group was valuable, and her tandem with a colleague was effective. Demonstrating exercises and keys on slides was very useful.”
  • “The manner of the speaker; interesting topic; a lot of exercises; interactive style”

The AWC workshops still continue this semester: you can join online events on writing a strong motivation letter in May and emotional intelligence in academia in June.
