Accent: How to boost your intelligibility

What is most important for pronunciation? To be understood!

In a rather recent past so many students of English dreamt about mastering "royal pronunciation." However, the present status of English as a lingua franca means that a national accent has turned from a flaw into an identity feature. Yet, certain pronunciation errors tend to impede communication.

The face-to-face course “My fair accent,” which the Academic Writing Center has run this spring for the second time, provides participants with training and support in order to overcome communication obstacles caused by incorrect pronunciation. During four practical sessions, the trainer Tatiana Skopintseva led the participants through a series of activities targeted at dealing with the most typical issues Russian-speaking users of English may have. The course program focused on the most challenging phonemes that can potentially affect speakers' intelligibility. The course outcome for every group member was the personalized set of recommendations based on a final task.

We would like to thank Tatiana for a highly practical course and the group - for their diligence and positive feedback:

  • "I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the AWC for organizing such a vibrant, enriching, and incredibly valuable course! This has been the best English course I have ever taken, and I am immensely grateful.”
  • “A special gratitude to Tatiana for her exceptional approach to teaching. Her methods are not only highly effective but also engaging and enjoyable. The progress I have made and the feedback I have received from Tatiana have been truly inspiring, motivating me to continue improving my English skills.”
  • “It was brilliant and very very useful, thank you so much! I was able to significantly improve my pronunciation. Thanks to the feedback, I realized what I need to work on.”
