Genre insights: Analyzing the book review

The Academic Writing Center continues a series of online workshops with Leslie Dupont, a writing expert from the University of Arizona. The second workshop was focused on the book review as a genre.

Genre insights: Analyzing the book review

During the workshop, participants examined reviews on books and monographs from various fields. Under the speaker's guidance, they analyzed samples and explored the genre features and strategies employed by authors to produce the desired effect. It was interesting to see how authors make their writing impactful.

We highly value an opportunity to create a space where our colleagues can discuss relevant issues and share experience. This time, the topic sparked a lively discussion. The participants shared what resonated with them personally in the feedback:

  • “I did enjoy group work, discussion, and the provided materials. The speaker has a good style of giving new information and uses the best methods of motivating participants. Thank you!”

  • “I think it made many of us think outside our disciplinary bubble.”

  • “I enjoyed the speaker’s engaging manner. We also discussed some aspects of a review I've never thought about.”

Although writing a book review is certainly a challenging task, is it well worth the effort because it helps the author to increase their visibility in academia. We hope that Leslie’s recommendations will encourage the colleagues to try their hand at this genre.
