“Nounification”: Where is the research language going?

“Nounification”: Where is the research language going?

Face-to-face or online - that is the question. There are certainly advantages to both formats. While “live” communication is invaluable, we realize that not everyone who is interested in our events has an opportunity to be present in the classroom. Hence, we decided to try the blended format for the first time, and we were pleased to do it together with our colleague and long-time partner Heather Belgorodtseva.

Last week, Heather ran a blended workshop at AWC on the use of nouns in academic discourse. Heather shared some research-based tips and offered participants on both sides of the screen a number of practical activities. Analyzing examples allowed the participants to deepen their understanding of the role of nouns, the functions of nominalization, and the principles of using noun phrases in academic texts.

The blended format proved to be beneficial for both online and face-to-face participants, and two hours flew by in lively discussions and group interaction.

  • “Excellent! I liked the presentation and the speaker’s emotional manner of delivery.”
  • “It was really practical, full of examples, and interactive.”
  • “Complicated topic that goes beyond basic things.”

We are grateful to Heather for her flexibility and for the friendly and warm atmosphere at the workshop. Join us at our events - both online and offline! There are only three workshops left this semester: don’t miss your chance to improve your academic writing skills.
