A fruitful Saturday: Diving into research writing
The Academic Writing Center constantly tries out new educational formats. Last week, we hosted a pilot one-day face-to-face course focused on structuring a research article in social sciences.
The course "Crafting a Research Text in the Social Sciences: From Writing an Abstract to Writing the Discussion Section" was designed by the AWC trainer Vera Dugartsyrenova especially for HSE researchers. Participants studied article samples to analyze each section’s language and structure and completed linguistic tasks in workbooks and online. The outcome of the course was criteria-based peer feedback that each participant received on their article fragment.
The colleagues found the one-day immersive format convenient and fruitful.
- “The most important thing I gained is clear understanding of every part of IMRAD, specific linguistic markers, and tenses. Seems like I can build this structure in my current article.”
- “I think the most important thing was to get the motivation to get started on writing my own paper in English that I was putting off for so long. The materials that were given have so many useful things that I’m curious to dig into them deeper.”
- “Thank you very much! I enjoyed being a participant and learned a lot. The trainer was brilliant. Her materials are very nicely made - useful and understandable.”
Don’t miss our online one-day course on writing an abstract that will take place on May 13.
