How does your audience perceive you?

This week participants of the workshop "How to ensure an effective presentation delivery" worked on techniques that help them develop public speaking skills.

How does your audience perceive you?

Giving presentations in English, we non-native speakers tend to sound rather monotonous. Non-contrastive intonation makes it difficult for the people to understand what we are really willing to say. So what verbal and non-verbal behaviors should we use to convey our ideas clearly and impactfully?

Tatiana Skopintseva shared some effective rhetorical techniques and exercises for controlling how the audience might perceive the speaker. At the workshop, participants had a lot of speech practice, varying volume, pitch, rate, and pauses, which is effective for presentation delivery.

Here’s what participants highlighted:

  • “It was great to switch from written communication to discussing some techniques of a spoken presentation. The speaker has prepared wonderful examples and has a warm and friendly manner of communication and very beautiful pronunciation.”

  • “I've got much interesting information; now I am sure I do everything with my students in the right way. We (teachers) must be actors!”

  • “I truly enjoyed a wide range of interesting exercises and the combination of theoretical materials with practical sessions. Everything was extremely positive and wise, modern and useful.”

We at the AWC are really grateful for Tatiana’s input. The recording of the session is on our channel.

It was the last workshop this semester. Follow our website updates to register for the workshops and courses in the coming year 2023. We have prepared new projects for you.
