Modifiers: Getting rid of ambiguity

The AWC held a workshop on modifiers

Modifiers: Getting rid of ambiguity

Mastering academic writing skills is challenging enough, even when you write in your native language. Imagine how many subtleties you have to take into account if you write in a foreign language.

At the workshop "Avoiding misplaced and dangling modifiers in academic writing" held by the Academic Writing Center, participants learnt how to find and correct tricky mistakes in the use of modifiers. The Center's trainer Ekaterina Redkina shared her tips and demonstrated how to make text clear and consistent.

During the workshop the participants:

  • explored three main types of errors in the use of modifiers
  • practiced correcting misplaced, dangling, and squinting modifiers
  • came up with their own examples from different research fields

The participants’ feedback:

"A very positive speaker, clear explanation of the topic with relevant examples and practice"

"The seminar was intense. The exercises were very helpful!"

"Good and clear-cut, useful exercises"

We would like to thank Ekaterina and all the participants for being so active and involved!

You can watch the workshop on our Youtube channel.
