Me in the spotlight: The art of self-presentation

Dear colleague, we are absolutely sure that your skills, competencies, interests, and achievements are hard to count! Which makes it infinitely more challenging to squeeze them into a short CV - not to mention a tiny conference bio.

Me in the spotlight: The art of self-presentation

On October 28, the AWC invited Ruslana Prosviryakova, HSE tutor and career consultant, to present an interactive workshop “About me and myself for different contexts,” which focused on strategies of building a digital profile in academia. Participants discussed different self-presentation genres from a full CV to a brief personal statement in social media. Analyzing stronger and weaker examples of such texts, the participants pinpointed the best techniques that fit various contexts and make a personal statement appropriate and persuasive.

The key takeaway: if you know your audience and can anticipate their expectations, your statement will hit the target.

  • “This issue is very important, and the workshop was a great opportunity to practice. We analyzed personal statements, received checklists, and a list of useful words and phrases.”
  • “The session provided practice-oriented information, specific, real-life examples, and communication. And useful tips!”
  • “I liked the content, the speaker, and her manner of delivery. It’s important to understand the differences between self-presentation channels.”
