Study materials

We have been collecting and creating materials to help researchers develop and improve their academic writing and speaking skills. In our Resource Center, you can find a variety of materials that can be helpful for both self-study and teaching. We also have fiction and non-fiction, materials for exam preparation, dictionaries, reference materials, etc. Visit the Resource Center in G-505, 11, Pokrovskiy blvd. Our doors are always open! 

Self-study materials
The aim of these self-study materials is to improve academic writing and speaking in English. These skills are essential for any researcher who writes academic texts and participates in conferences. The self-study materials are made by the graduates of the AWC School of Trainers. All workbooks contain authentic sample texts, exercises with keys and explanations, learning strategies and tips. Textbook "How to Write a Research Article: Textbook for Early-Career Researchers"
The textbook is intended for early-career researchers who are planning to publish their articles in international peer-reviewed journals. You will learn about the conventions of research writing in English and prepare your draft for publication through a set of guided activities. The textbook also contains strategies and checklists, appendices, supplementary materials, references to useful resources, and answer keys. The textbook is written by experts in academic English: Elena Bazanova, President of the Association of Academic Writing Experts “National Writing Centres Consortium“, and Svetlana Suchkova, Director of HSE Academic Writing Center.
Textbook "English for Academics"
English for Academics series is a communication skills course for academics who need to work and socialise in English. Aimed at B1 level and above, this practice-oriented series offers a wide variety of activities to develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. It covers a range of situations, from making small talk at a conference to giving a presentation, from reading a range of academic texts to writing academic correspondence, abstracts, and summeries. The textbook was developed by a team of authors, including Svetlana Suchkova, Director of HSE Academic Writing Center, and Svetlana Bogolepova, Programme Academic Supervisor of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication (HSE).
"Learn to Write with Us: A Process-based Writing Textbook"
This textbook is intended for university students, and it aims to develop academic writing skills, which are necessary in academic and professional spheres. The textbook contains various activities to develop paragraph-writing skills; other chapters are focused on different genres and provide guidance for improving punctuation and self-editing skills. The series includes a book for students and a book for teachers. The book is written by Svetlana Suchkova, Director of HSE Academic Writing Center, in collaboration with academic writing experts Gulnara Dudnikova and Olga Adayeva.
Workbook "Writing Centers in Multilingual Settings"
The workbook highlights the features of the process of creating academic writing centers in Russian universities. It includes a theoretical part, which substantiates all the "pros" and "cons" of opening centers for academic writing of the English language on the university platform; and practical, which describes a detailed algorithm for creating such centers. The workbook was developed at the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Professional Communication of Samara State University. The author is Eve Smith, an English language specialist who helped Samara State University to create an academic writing center.
Textbook "Academic English for Students of Social Sciences"
The textbook is intended for university students studying social sciences, taking into account their professional needs. The required level of language proficiency of students is from intermediate to advanced. The book aims to equip students with the language skills and additional skills they may need in their chosen career, developing critical thinking and learning skills. Academic, language, and professional skills are taught simultaneously in a professional context, complementing and reinforcing each other. The textbook was developed by Svetlana Suchkova, Director of HSE Academic Writing Center, together with Lyudmila Kuznetsova, Candidate of Philology and Associate Professor at the Department of Philology at St Petersburg University.
Participants' book "ESP Teacher Development Course"
The book contains methodological materials of the course for improving the professional competence of ESP teachers at non-linguistic universities, intended for faculties of additional education and centers for advanced training. It was developed by a group of Russian teachers under the guidance of British experts and with the financial and organizational support of the British Council in Moscow. The book is intended for students of the professional development course and is an integral part of the set of training materials for this course.
