AWC Welcome Day 2024 (online)
Workshops
Start mapping out your literature review with AI
This online workshop will focus on using AI to optimize the process of writing a literature review. We will speak about AI tools that can help at the following stages of writing a literature review:
- searching for relevant literature
- utilizing digital libraries of primary sources in various languages and developing strategies for overcoming language barriers
- prioritizing and sorting literature.
The workshop will result in compiling a list of AI tools for further use.
Speaker: Natalia Zharkova, manager at the HSE Academic Writing Center, the author and organizer of the AI Geeks project. She holds a degree in history from HSE University. Her professional interests include using AI for academic purposes.
Writing in partnership: Overcoming pitfalls
Recently the number of articles written in co-authorship has been growing, reflecting the trend for interdisciplinary research. However, writing in a team raises many questions: What does co-authorship mean in academic writing? What strategies for collaborative writing can be used to produce a joint text? How can authors make the writing process fruitful, flexible, and enjoyable? How can they avoid possible challenges and common mistakes? At the workshop, we will try to cover all these questions. We will discuss the caveats of collaborative writing and possible advantages for each member of the research team. We will practice applying the SWOT approach to identify possible strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a joint project. We will focus on the soft skills of collaboration and the diversity of roles that joint research and publication may entail. Finally, we will discuss the contents of “Acknowledgements” and “Authors’ contributions” sections. Participants will be invited to share their own experience.
Speaker: Natalia Tsatsenko, Ph.D. in Economics, a member of the Postdoc Program at HSE University. She participated in an interdisciplinary project in the ZALF institute, Leibniz Association and was a member of SME Management Graduate School at the University of Siegen where she taught economic disciplines and ran seminars for international master students. Natalia’s research interests lie in the fields of economic growth, structural transformation, development economics, economics of African countries, interdisciplinarity, and sustainable agriculture.
Breaking Barriers: From a Blank Page to a Published Article
For many early-career researchers, writing a research article can be a source of significant psychological and technical difficulties. At the workshop, we will discuss some psychological barriers that may arise while writing and explore the importance of overcoming the fear of a blank page to find the motivation to start and finish the work.
We will talk about selecting an appropriate journal for publication, as this is not always an obvious choice, particularly for those working in an interdisciplinary field. Particular attention will be given to structuring an article. We will also discuss the language aspects one should focus on when publishing articles in English.
Speaker: Valeria Koncha is a junior research fellow at the International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development, a research fellow at the Laboratory for Linguistic, Intercultural and Creative Competencies, a lecturer at the Department of Politics and Governance, and a Ph.D. student at the Doctoral School of Political Science. Her interdisciplinary research interests are digital political mobilization, protests and social movements, digital technologies, quantitative methodology, polylingual creativity, multilingualism, and intercultural competencies. Valeria has had publications in Q1-Q2 peer-reviewed international and Russian journals. She conducts research within the framework of grants from the Russian Science Foundation and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Human Potential.
Reviewer’s nightmare
All of us have dealt with reviewers at least once. Sometimes the communication is not very pleasant. We are inviting you to look at the reviewing process through the lens of a reviewer. We will discuss why investing time in peer review can be rewarding, how to make it a routine and integrate the experience in your own manuscript preparation. We will focus on some typical problems that international peer reviewers face with manuscripts and communication, and on ways of solving these issues. We will talk about some strategies for giving feedback and formulating suggestions for improvement. We do not want to become an evil "reviewer #2,"do we?
Speaker: Maxim Rozhkov is an associate professor at the Department of Operations Management and Logistics, Graduate School of Business, HSE University. His research interests are digital technologies in supply chain management and logistics, supply chain resilience, and application of simulation methods. He published articles in such journals as International Journal of Production Research, Annals of Operations Research, International Journal of Integrated Supply Management, Omega. He has written more than one hundred peer reviews since 2019. Maxim is a recipient of Most Cited Paper Awards of International Journal of Production Research (2021) and Omega Best Paper Award (2022).
A case study: How to write and publish it
The content of many university courses now contains case studies. Case studies can have different formats and be successfully integrated into the learning process. Case study is quite a popular research genre for publication, too. At the workshop, we are going to discuss such questions as: How can we write up a good case study? Where should we start? How can we choose the right case study format? How can we register and publish a case study? Come to the workshop to share your experience.
Speaker: Ekaterina Shekova, an associate professor at the Department of Management, HSE St. Petersburg campus, received her Ph.D. in economics at St. Petersburg State University. Dr.Shekova has authored textbooks on cultural management and marketing issued by “Lan” and “Planet of Music” publishing houses. She has also registered several of her case studies at the European Case Clearing House.
