“It was a game-changer for me”
On April 16th, a group of HSE researchers completed the AWC course “Writing an Empirical Research Article in English. Advanced Level” with the trainer Natalia Smirnova. They were the third cohort to take this course - and, as the quote in the title suggests, we’ll definitely run the course again.

The program was designed for researchers with an advanced level of English and some experience of writing articles for publication, as well as with a strong motivation to take their writing to a new level. This year the syllabus was upgraded. Natalia guided participants through the whole process of preparing a research article - from choosing a journal and formulating the research question to building strong arguments and final revision. The outcome was a draft and individual feedback from the trainer.
Some feedback:
- “I would like to thank Natalia for this wonderful course. It was a game-changer for me. Now I truly believe that with a certain amount of effort I can get published.”
- “I wanted to know how I should approach writing articles in English, what I need to keep in mind, and this course fully met my expectations. One main idea per article and paragraph, added value etc. All of these nuances helped me to better understand the process of writing.”
- “The most relevant and useful tasks were those that combined academic writing practice with AI-assisted revision. For example, using AI to diagnose weaknesses in a draft, improve the clarity of the introduction, refine contribution statements, and revise responses to reviewers was particularly helpful. I also found the tasks based on my own research article very useful, because they allowed me to apply the course methods directly to real writing problems. Peer review exercises were also valuable, as they helped me evaluate writing from the perspective of readers and reviewers.”
