Online course "Introduction to Academic Writing"
The online training course presents a structure of English academic text and examples of correct language patterns for providing definitions, describing conclusions, translating scientists’ views therein. The participants are going to analyze the structure and cohesion of sample texts. Online course implies independent study; it consists of 4 modules (2 units in each one). Modules include training activities (text analysis, writing, vocabulary and grammar exercises). All participants are to receive feedback in written or oral form (recording) on all writing exercises. To complete the course participants must submit all the tasks before the deadline. The names of the participants who complete the course will be put on the list of the HSE Training Centre. Researchers and professors of HSE (HSE being the primary employer) are eligible for this course. Applicants will have to fill in the application and write a motivation letter in English (critical selection criterion).
Tutor: Alina Brooks (DELTA, MA in Applied Linguistics, Cambridge/IELTS Examiner, CELTA trainer). Miss Brooks has been working with the Higher School of Economics for a long time, teaching both face-to-face and online classes. Miss Brooks is a member of TESOL France methodological association of teachers, and is interested in methodological, psychological and linguistic aspects related to the training of future English professors and methodological support of professors.
Course duration: from May 12th till June 16th
How do I get accepted? The course is available for HSE faculty. Please, fill out an online registration form and write a motivation letter. It should include your experience of public speaking, lecturing or teaching in English. Please also describe key difficulties you faced when lecturing or teaching in English and explain how new skills are relevant to your teaching.
