Online course "Basics of Writing an Empirical Research Article"

The purpose of this online course is to teach the basics of research writing. The course program covers the main aspects of successful intercultural academic communication: usage of academic English by Russian-speaking researchers in their articles, language and speech culture of academic English, argumentative language techniques, academic grammar and punctuation rules. The aim is to develop skills for writing an empirical research article, in regards to culturally and professionally conditioned rhetorical traditions. During the course, students will work on their own research papers which will be finalised by the end of the course.

Tutor: Natalia Smirnova (PhD in Teaching English as Foreign Language), senior lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.  She has designed and taught courses in Research writing, Writing for publication, Rhetoric, Argumentation and writing both for students and researchers. She has been involved in designing innovative online projects in professional writing (e.g. “My first pre-print”, an e-learning module for the NRU HSE researchers cotaught with Zhenya Bakin). Natalia is a Cambridge TESOL examiner (full suite). She is currently doing her Post Graduate degree in the field of Applied Linguistic with the Open University, UK. Natalia has a strong research interest in the social perspectives on writing, ESOL pedagogies and writing assessment. Natalia also holds a position of the Deputy Head of the Department and is responsible for teaching/learning support of the ESOL instructors and students.
